In Colossians 4 Paul writes. ‘Pray for us that God may open a door for our message that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly.’
If anyone knew how to proclaim the gospel effectively, then Paul did, and yet he still asks for help! How much more then, do we need to pray and seek wisdom to make the message of the gospel clear?
The challenge for the church today, as in every generation, is to proclaim the Christian message clearly. All over the UK people are thinking about how we can share the Christian message in ways and words that are relevant.
We want to see every believer equipped to share their faith well, and in language that people can understand in today’s culture. For example, since our postmodern revolution, researchers have identified that in our Western culture there has been a shift from guilt to shame ie from ‘I’ve done something wrong’ to ‘there’s something wrong with me’.
This raises a number of questions for us:
What would the gospel look like to enable it to redeem this shame culture?
What are the connect points for today’s issues with the Christian message?
How do we talk about Jesus?
Laurence Singlehurst and Trevor Withers have spent many years thinking and writing about these issues. Laurence’s bestselling Grove Booklet, The Gospel Message Today, has started this conversation in many different places. And Trevor has been researching, writing and running workshops about shame with churches and other groups.
Cell UK are holding a new, one day training day, where Laurence and Trevor will teach on these issues. Trevor will speak about our shame based culture and how we can share the gospel message effectively in this context. Laurence will speak on contextualisation and connect points and how to share Jesus conversationally amongst our friends, neighbours and workplace.
If you are interested in the words of the gospel message, and how we make them clear, join us for this stimulating and informative day.
